Ah, far more than the white man and a lot more than a whole bunch of folks now a days! Daily leap into the nearest creek/stream/pond/lake and they did have soap. I thought everyone knew about soap lilies and soap yucca, etc.

BTW, the American Indian has little to no body hair and sweats less than the Caucasoids of European ancestry. Less hair less retained smell. Less sweat, less smell to begin with.

And, you are correct, the smoke keeps lots of critters away. However, contrary to popular belief, the teepee and the wigwam were specifically designed to be excellent draws and retained relatively little smoke. Plus, I might add, very little cooking was done inside and most of the year you wouldn't have a fire inside.

How often do you suppose they bathed, used soaps and shampoos? If I
were planning to go out half naked into the woods to get a deer I
would likely slather some smooshed jewelweed and mud on me. Hide the
human odor, an attractant to bloodsuckers worldwide and certainly a
deer repellent.

And I'm betting those smoky teepees and wigwams were inhospitable to
insects.
