Thanks....

When I lived near a city, I couldn't get "free tv" even though I could see
one of the TV towers from my property... cable or satellite was the only
option.

Now here I am, in the middle of nowhere at least 6 hours from Albuquerque,,,,
and I get signals from Alb, and El Paso,,, and who knows where....
free........ (until they pull the analog plug that is...  Then I'll have to
buy a box, whenever I get around to it..

There were a number of families near where I lived in Homestead, except some
other group... since they used tractors and drove cars, etc.  They
collectively ran a roadside operation selling off a lot of the food they
grew.  They also made home-made breads, etc.   People would drive from miles
and miles away to get veggies and bread, ice cream etc. from them during the
season.

Supposedly, there is another group somewhere around Palomas, Mexico, but same
thing - heard they use machinery.

The article is reasonably accurate but about 40 years or so behind
time. Some of the 'younger' communities have set themselves up to be
working out, and many of the older ones got crunched for ground a long
time ago, and they've worked out since. The group/s in the area
northeast of Fort Wayne, IN, have both worked out and had business
depending on 'the English' for 60 years that I know about....in the late
50s my Amish (then) husband was working on a Case 410, digging ditches
for a landscaper....who still hires Amish help. Also, older 'retired'
folks have often worked for the English or had businesses dealing with them.

So there's nothing new in the overall picture, but they are apparently
seeing an increase of folks working out in the eastern OH and PA groups.

I find it curious that author notes they can lowbid on jobs because they
don't have to pay SS. True, but even better is that they get
trustworthy, trained workers who know how to and want to work, who show
up on time, who do not sue, work independently for reasonable pay, do
not expect a lot of benefits, usually being happy to be off on Sundays
and other Amish holidays and weddings/funerals, and so all put together
they have a good chance at getting most any job.

I just came back from my brother-in-law's funeral in IN---three full
days of it. He was an outstanding person who make/left no enemies. I
forgot how scary it is to ride in a buggy in traffic!!! Anyway, he was
a farmer (grew and distilled mint oils) until his oldest was married,
then moved off the farm so the kids could have it. Moved into Topeka,
where he was a secretary for a veterinarian for many years, and my
sister-in-law worked at the sale barn cooking up delicious Amish eats
for horse buyers. It was a traumatic trip for me, not only because I
have known and loved the both of them for 50 years now, but it was a
smack-in-your-face review of what might have been in my own life, both
the good and the not so good.
