Happy Birthday Gene, and Merry Christmas to anyone on the list who is an
Orthodox Christian!

I think it is all relative...when you lose money or your source of
money, you feel shame that you can no longer live in the standard of
living you have become accustomed to. It is the shame and despair that
drives people to suicide, not the money itself. Merckel inherited much
of his money, so I'm pretty sure that he felt like he had disgraced the
family.
There but for grace of god, go I. When I quit my job last summer, I
surely created the financial mess I am in today. Sure the economy is
slow and dh's paycheck has felt it, but I can't blame that-I have to
take responsibility, too. We all make our choices and hope they are the
right ones...we gamble on life, whether by buying stock or planting corn
or quitting a job. You win some, you lose some. You take your lumps,
or you take the easy way out.

24 hour gauge and 3.22 for the year total.

Suicides occur for many reasons, in general unhappiness, whether from
physical or psychological pain. The upper socio-economic class is comprised of a tiny percentage of world population so of course those
suicide numbers are small compared to the general population.

The discussion here is not suicide; it is about money. It is the question of how money contributes to happiness. My readings are that
once necessities are attained, more money does not bring much more
happiness and in fact the pursuit of money often becomes a never- ending and angst-ridden quest--an example of the law of diminishing
returns. _______________________________________________ Homestead
