Desert soil can run to sand, silt, or that most common combination, adobe
with l ittle or no organic material. When dry the adobe soil is just like
it sounds, very hard and almost impossible to work. To hand dig a trench
requires a pick and lots of sweat or a jackhammer. When wet it is easy to
dig but comes out as clumps that dry to rock hard clods. I did all my
digging in winter after the rains because it was cooler and the ground was
workable.
