I've seen them do something out here that makes the fence posts last a lot
longer. they build a fire and char the ends that will be buried. apparently,
they can last until some people in the future dig them up as archaeological
finds..at least the charred part will remain even after the tops rot away. i
would suppose that you don't burn them completely, just enough to char the
outside layers of wood.
