You know, I agree with you...I really like the Hispanics as a
minority..I like folks that have a good work ethic and are honorable. I
have never met anyone from Central America who was lazy. I realize there
are Hispanic gangs and such like other ethnicities, but I don't see that
here.
At least 1/3 of the workforce from my former employer was Hispanic.
They were, for the most part, upwardly mobile. One guy owned several
houses and rented them out. Perhaps your guys are moving up in the
world and not renting those old homes? Here, Hispanics are buying
houses with land, so they can have chickens and goats and such.
Do you think it is possible that they have just moved on, and not moved
back? Also, here, the cops harass them a lot-roadblocks and such, so
they don't go out much after dark or on weekends.
My best Mexican friend is actually back in Mexico as we speak. He got
married here last year and has a baby who was born here last March.
Ramon was illegal, but has gone back to try to enter legally. He's been
gone almost two months now, and although his wife has come back, he
still has to stay there for the time being. I do hope he gets
permission to immigrate. America needs people like Ramon.
I don't see what you see though, James.

First, and no mistake, I say this with some regret. I have very much
liked the Mexicans (and others) and I am not entirely glad to see
them go.
My neighbors who have farms and businesses refurbed every old house
and trailer as Hispanic residence so they would have a place to live
while they worked in the businesses. Logging, construction, and
farming mainly. Those places are empty now. Used to be, not very
long ago, that one could stop in for a 'copita' or a 'cuento' but no
more. To the inquiries of "Where's Victor, where's Ramon?" the
reply is "Mexico, Guatemala, or Quien Sabe?"
One heard a continuous patois of Spanish at the Mart and the local
fried chicken place. Not very much any more.
These observations only reinforce the published statistics that an
exodus is underway. In many ways, 'Que lastima,' it's a pity. It
was never economically so sociologically sound and that is proving
out in the end. But a 'lastima' none the less.
