Please Gene...that is almost a "gag me" statement.  Barack should be paying
you to campaign for him.

Seriously, the revolution will be when people vote for a third party.  It is
the only non-violent way to protest what is happening in our country that
will make an immediate difference.

I disagree, Rob.  Anyone can quickly pick up an accent. It really
doesn't take that long.  To this day, I say the word 'salt' like a
Bostonian, and I only worked with Gordon for one year.  I do say 'radio'
like a Southerner, though<g>.  Things can be picked up quickly,
discarded quickly, or not.

How is any of the above related to why you personally never trusted Bush
because of his accent?

Well, of course they consider it.  It is the conclusion that they come
up with that is causing your problem.  They may not care that they sound
like a Kennedy.  They may think it a wonderful connotation.  Some may
hear and recall the rhetoric and inspirational voice of JFK, others may
hear and recall the various scandals the Kennedy's have brought upon
themselves(Chappaquick, William K. Smith's rape charge, etc. etc.)

Of course, but see above.

Very often it is true that a strong Southern accent is a disadvantage in
business because of that 'dufus' or 'redneck' image it brings to some.
It doesn't make it right. You know, Rob, just because some people have a
problem with my accent doesn't mean that I need to fix it.  MLK said
that people should be judged on the content of their character, and
while he did not say accent in the next part of the sentence, he could
have.
Many Southerners are now reclaiming the pride in themselves and standing
up to this form of discrimination.  I'll be damned if I ever try to stop
saying "fixin' to" or y'all.  Some of us, (like Paula Dean) are actually
turning our accents into assets.

You say something like this and then you say we of the list are racist?
C'mon Rob.  We are all biased to some degree, and your own bias just
reared it's head.
Personally, I never noticed that Sharpton doesn't speak 'proper
English'.  I saw him interviewed just last weekend, commenting on the
Jessie Jackson n-word incident, and he spoke just fine.
Secondly, what is wrong with being "the black candidate"?  I voted for
Jessie Jackson in 1984, so tell me what is wrong with that?

 My thought has been
> does Bush's speech pattern help to create an image of him that would
> distract from the fact that his family are Connecticut Yankees,
> modern day carpetbaggers and northeastern educated?

Perhaps that was a motivating factor for him, I dunno.  Maybe he wanted
to portray himself as being more downhome and less elite.  I really,
really can't imagine why anyone would choose to pick up a Southern
accent though, because MOST people think negatively about them.

Get over it. People that say Maysure instead of measure or draers
instead of drawers catch my attention, but I don't hold it against
them..that's part of who they are.  Maysure was just as much a part of
my Math professors Midwestern upbringing as "Fixin' to" was to mine.

Let me make one thing clear as I have been one who has been vocal against
Obama for president.  I do not support McCain and Palin. I will vote third
party.  I am a Libertarian.

Akka B, wondering who Rob thinks is a racist here.

Lynn, you are so right!!!
I try to tell people this all the time.  People are just too worried
about"throwing away their vote"  Our whole society conditions us to want to
support winners to the point that people don't think anymore.  Sometimes,
what is good for the country short term is not good for the country long
term.

I owe an apology to both Robs on the list.
I was cutting pears,
drying pears, multitasking to the max, and answering email.  In that
process, I combined two posts, thinking that they were from the same
person.  In another post, Minnesota (Becida) Rob said that he had seen
racism on this list.  VA Rob had made no such claim.   While I disagree
with VA Rob's comments about Sharpton, I attributed an attitude to his words
that were not in evidence, and I am sorry.

Akka
B, doing too much at once...hates this kind of conflict on the
list...it is becoming too personal for my taste, and with my foot
firmly in my mouth, I will back out of this conversation and get back
to my pears.

You say something like this and then you say we of the list are racist?
C'mon Rob.  We are all biased to some degree, and your own bias just
reared it's head.

The part of this that you have forgotten is that he wanted to fish.  To fish
requires that one hold a license.  In many states, they require you to jump
through the same hoops for a fishing license as they would a hunting license,
and of course, that means a background check, instant check with your SS# in
this state anyway.  You are recorded.

As far as records of movement, there are cameras everywhere today.  Our local
Walmart, where you would probably go to get that license, has 30 cameras that
I can see covering just the parking lot.
I have forgotten the statistic as to how many times a day the average person
is "recorded".

Just my little interjection into this conversation...
I am super interested in this discussion on socialism..

Gag away. Here we express opinions uncensored. Take it or leave it.

I sincerely believe Barack Obama is the best chance in decades to make
right many wrong things that have been imposed upon us by those of
lesser humanity.

The revolution is named Barack Obama.
