I wasn't following this thread but read by happenstance. Our 100+ yera old
Stayman Winesap looks ill this year, for the first time on our watch (8+
years). It is half fully leafed out as per normal but the remainder of the
branches are covered with just a scattering of leaves and many, smaller bare
branches. However the limb is, whether 'ill' or 'healthy,' it is this way
all the way from branch tip to the trunk.
Within 100 ft (will have to measure, may be as few as 60'?) is a small black
walnut tree the former owner had planted. This is a small tree, perhaps
10-12 years old. Interestingly enough, the healthier side of the tree is
closer to the black walnut tree. Could a tree this small still be that
potent? Do you think this could be the problem?
Had just sent photos to a friend with a large old apple orchard in Vermont,
so he could hopefully diagnose our tree's problem. It's so old and beautiful
(and will bear lots of apples this year), we hope to save it.
