Thank you.
I was thinking only vegetables. I hadn't thought about other trees. Now I am wondering if that is why an apple tree failed; it was close to a large black walnut.

I asked DH (landscaper) about this and he said that it is recommended that
no part of the black walnut tree, and to a lesser degree the English and
Persian walnut trees, be used in compost to be used on certain plants. They
are: apple, azalea, white birch, blackberry, blueberry, chrysanthemum,
autumn crocus, forget-me-not, grapes, mountain laurel, peony, pine,
potatoes, rhodies, thyme and tomatoes.
Some plants are definately tolerant of a mulch/compost with the catkins in
it:
Trees/shrubs that are "tolerant" are: arborvitae, white ash, barberry,
American beech, black birch, boxelder, buckeye, catalpa, black cherry,
crabapple, daphne, flowering dogwood, elderberry, American elm, forsythia,
fringetree, goldenrain tree, globeflower, black gum, hawthorn, Canadian

red cedar, eastern redbud, sassafrass, serviceberry, Carolina silverbell,
Norway spruce, sumac, sweetgum, sycamore, tulip tree, viburnums and
witchhazel.
Flowers/groundcovers that are "tolerant": anemone, aster, astilbe, bee
balm, begonia, bittersweet, calendula, clemantis, coral bells, Virginia
creeper, daffodill, shasta daisy, daylily, evening primrose, fern (some
types), hardy geraniums, goldenrod, wild grape, hollyhock, hosta,
grape/oreintal hyacinth, siberian iris, ironweed, jack-in-the-pulpi, lamb's
