Friends of mine who live in suburbia have lost LOTS of plants to deer. He now uses the $25 electric fence chargers and strings up the most economical of fences: "step-in" fiberglass posts and conductive plastic fence line.

(Note: The Zarebe SP3B fence chargers - "Three mile", sun operated, about $100) are NOT reliable. Two here quit after rains. One of the replacements is weak. Our local Co-Op fellow has a collection of bad ones.)
