San Diego County tried to build a trash to energy plant near a land fill. The idea was to build a separation plant to pull out the recyclables and unburnables then send the left overs to a burner to generate electricity. The nearby landfill was also to be plumbed for methane for the burner. It turned into a huge $100 million boondoggle that the county is still paying for.

During planning stages the county was sued because burning trash would spew all sorts of things out of the stack. They could not come up with a cost effective way to recirculate or scrub the exhaust to get it clean. So the energy part was scrapped but only after most of the building was in place.

They still went ahead with the recyclables removal but it was expensive for very little return, the whole project was cost based on the energy output. Even then they used wild return estimates that did not happen in the middle of the energy manipulation several years ago. The recycling cost the County even more to operate due to insurance costs.

Then a developer wanted to build several hundred houses on a tract near the land fill so he used every vehicle to get the land fill closed. He bought off politicians, financed environmental groups, and sued everybody in sight. He eventually got the landfill closed and built his houses, some right over the old landfill. Now they are having problems with kids throwing matches into the methane vents and starting fires.

Now trash is hauled to Arizona and the Antelope Valley, several hundred miles away. Trucks returning from these landfills carry sand for the beaches. The reason they need sand for the beaches is because several dams are holding back sand that used to be washed down in yearly floods. Those floods would cover areas that are now covered with very expensive homes. Sand already on the beaches is shoved further out to sea by break waters designed to keep sand from filling harbor entrances or washing away from beaches.

Look what happens when gasoline prices spike to over $3 as they have in recent years and will for the future.

My view is the whole concepts of peak oil, global warming, etc. are just
catch phrases based on truth, but whose real purpose is to create an
atmosphere of hysteria that will economically benefit the "ruling elite"
of the world. ;)
I know some of you listen to Coast to Coast at night..I'm not ashamed to
admit that I do...last night, there was a very interesting guy, Lowell
Ponte, talking about global warming...he brought up some ideas I hadn't
thought of, but that make sense to me. He seemed to "untwist" the
sordid world of all the global warming statistics that you always hear
about, and had some very interesting things to say about sulfer
emissions in particular.
He bucks the mainstream ideas, and was harsh on Al Gore..not a good
thing for those of you holding the populist view on global warming, but
his interview is in the first hour of C2C, and you might want to listen
to it if you missed it...
