What do you guys use to store seeds in?
I have a conglomerate mix...some are in paper envelopes, some are in
ziplock bags, some are in glass jars. I have more seed that a feed
store and there is no way I could freeze or refrigerate it, so I either
shove the stuff in coffee cans or in plastic bins and put them either in
my closet or on the pantry shelves (dark, cool) The bad thing about
using so many different kinds of containers is that it makes it hard to
organize the seed. I try to organize seed by when it is planted, for
example, onions, radishes, spinach and lettuces are grouped together,
the cole crops are together, etc. After 10 years, I think I have enough
seed saved to really give some thought to how I want to save seed in the
future, and need a better way to control temp and humidity, prevent
mold, and keep everything organized so I don't lose cans like I the one
I just found. I'm looking for input on how to save and store larger
quantities of seed of many varieties. (I must have more than 30 kinds
of tomatoes now...haven't counted them, but gosh, I have a lot of
tomatoes!) I end up growing things every few years...for example, the
last time I grew a lot of pickling cucumbers was in 2002. I still have
pickles from that year! I won't grow them in 2007, as this is going to
be a BIG tomato year...(I hope) Also, I want to crow cantaloupes and
honeydews this year instead of watermelons..so I don't grow certain
things every single year.
