Eldest son works for a company that makes parts for all kinds of computers, or rather he did until they bought a house in Idaho and moved <g> He said there are laptops that are made for "industrial" use and stand up to some pretty tough treatment. Not something you'll find at Staples or WallyWorld but stuff they market for businessmen that do a lot of traveling.
I'll have to ask him what make and model. He had one and he took some pretty rough knocking about and was dropped more than once.
Of course, they come with a higher price tag.

Advantages:
Portable - back and forth to the library and other places.
and for Astronomy - being able to carry out to the field to drive a CCD camera on a telescope
Disadvantage:
Portable - Easy to lose or get stolen
Easy to Drop
