Years ago, While working on a reservation in Northern Montana (actually, I
was walking to the post office), I about went in my drawers when I actually
stepped on a rattler. It struck my boots (which I had almost not put on
that morning), and I drew and emptied my pistol into it (had a concealed
carry permit at the time). I have a healthy respect for rattlesnakes.
They are very good at what they do. Incidentally, I also respect sharks.

I wish I didn't have to kill them, which I do only around the
clearing. Walked close past a Pygmy rattlesnake a few days ago and
almost didn't see him on the rock driveway. Smaller than the one that
put me out of commission for a few months about twelve years ago.
Pygmy rattlers are small but nasty poisonous. Need to get cats to
keep down the mice.
