Some basic differences with the scale of some of the disasters recently
brought up.

Unlike hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and the like, tornados and sheet
lightning do not lay waste to entire regions. I lived in areas where
tornados were pretty common, but never did one destroy the entire
infrastructure of
an area. My grandfather was hit by lightning once, but the ambulance that
took him to the hospital still functioned just fine. I can remember parts
of
Bismarck flooding in heavy rains years ago ( my folks were caught in it),
but still the basic city emergency services functioned.

I will happily accept the personal risk of these smaller scale disasters.
I will not, as I stated earlier, accept the risks of those on a grander
scale.

Perhaps I'm just paranoid, but sometimes everyone really is out to get
you... ;-)
