I'm always amazed at how stuff I'm thinking about suddenly pops up in the press.

No pun intended, the energy is in the air.

Yesterday I heard on Science Friday on NPR a talk with the top energy scientist in Great Britain. A caller asked about homes having their individual energy power plants. He said we're not quite there but it is a real possibility. He referred to methane as the fuel; I suspect he may have used a British word for natural gas, maybe not. He is serious about global warming and gave examples of how it is already causing new challenges.

Then I read an article in Newsweek May 16 titled: Designing the Future, about William McDonough, an "ecological architect" who, among other projects, is helping China design seven new cities and housing for 400 million people in the next 12 years. He is very opposed to cutting trees to make paper, tells how recycling regular paper is wasteful, has published a book printed on paper made of plastic resins and inorganic fillers that are infinitely recyclable. "We have safe, lightweight inks designed to float off the paper in a bath of 180 degrees . . . ." Regarding polluting industries, "Our idea is to make production so clean, there's nothing bad left to regulate. This is extremely interesting to people of all political persuasion--those who love the environment and those who want commerce free of regulation."

It's worth a read.

My message here is that we can focus on the doom and gloomers or we can find, become informed by and follow the examples and teachings of people who are out front on energy and environmental issues.

It's a choice.
