There have been many times but these times are different. I personally believe that skills and tools are much more valuable than any hard currency.

I suspect the times are not really as different as they seem. But yes I agree, skills & tools are more valuable over the long term.
The best thing would be a mixture of precious metals, tools & skills but then most things are a blending rather than black OR white.

One thing to keep in mind is a quote from "The Mouse That Roared" (as best as I can remember it).
"The pen is mightier than the sword but the sword speaks louder and quicker at any given moment".
