Actually, the notion of not writing about people with whom you have a relationship is not so unusual. I've lost out on business writing assignment when asked to profile the company of a guy I'm on a board with. Also, journalists are pretty much required to tell the editor if there is a relationship.

Many newspapers and probably a fair number of magazine would have similar standards. The idea of a journalist is always to appear to be above showing favoritism (or animosity).

Do you write and publish stories about gardens that belong to friends? Have you ever had an editor refuse a story (or an assignment) because the garden was a friend's garden?
