Carol,

My guess, and I have grown currants before, would be that he has all the same exact kind of currants growing there, and would benefit from some cross pollination. Adding a few more currant bushes of a different cultivar would almost certainly help. Most black currants are self-fruitful, but like almost all fruiting trees, vines or shrubs, the fruit set is better with a mix of cultivars.

Subject: [gwl-g] Currant problem

Hi Folks:
I have a problem from a reader and as I have never grown currants, I need some help. His black currants bud up wonderfully but then before opening they all drop off with the exception of 3 or 4 on each of his five plants. He is in zone 5 and has pine trees within sight of the currants. Frost is not the problem. He can't detect any pests or disease. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Carol
