Some good suggestions for slug control. We produce the Slug Saloon and Snailer traps. We mix malted barley, dried brewers yeast and sugar to make the bait. Whitney Cranshaw at Colorado State University did some trials and found that alcohol repelled slugs, but malt, yeast and sugar attracted them. The mixture of the three worked very well to attract both slugs and snails, as well as sow bugs and earwigs. Beer started working after the alcohol evaporated off. We mix the ingredients dry and bag it. The gardener mixes a teaspoon of the mix with some water in the tray of the Slug Saloon.

Slugs fall into the bait and drown. Snails dont drown, so Randy Wells, developer of the Snailer came up with hanging gates that the snails push open to enter the trap. The gates then swing shut, trapping the snails.

If you would like to save the beer for yourself, try some our slug and snail bait. Samples available for trial.

We have gotten a report that our traps dont trap the banana slugs. It would be great to get more observers is banana slug territory.

We also carry Snail Barr, a three inch wide copper foil (3 mil thick) with slits every inch on one edge. This is heavier than the very thin foil with adhesive backing. It makes a good, long lasting barrier to stop slugs and snails.

I have talked to a number of customers who have had dogs poisoned by the metaldehyde snail bait. The metaldehyde degrades into formaldehyde that sterilizes the soil where applied. With these low risk alternatives, it would be great to see the toxic baits taken off the market for lack of interest.
