"...tested two identical tomato plants..."

A few comments re backyard tests, with a "control" or not.

Sample size is critical in drawing worthwhile conclusions. So, a trial with
two plants, even though "identical," is precious little on which to base any
conclusion.

Further, reliable trials are repeated for several years, this because one
year the weather may have been more, or less, favorable to the outcome.

Various retail products are said to "benefit" plants, even though the outcome
of the trial(s), whether or not university-based, didn't show a statistically
significant result.

Hype doesn't benefit the gardening public, nor does it elevate the efforts of
garden writers.
