....whereas if there was some sort of light meter, like a rain gauge receptacle, it would take some of the guess work out of siting plants when the surrounding trees cast shadows differently at various hours.....

You may be looking for a radiometer. You can google that term or you can go to http://psychtoolbox.org/measure.html and get a sense of all the kinds of light measurement systems you can pick from. Hope this helps.
