Doreen & All,
per: "Tom might also consider that his publisher can demand excerpt fees
for chapter or partial chapter use in magazines."
My publishers, Ten Speed Press, and, Time Warner Books, they both
encourage the sort of thing I do...which is to be as big a free PR hog as
humanly possible. At Ten Speed Press they told me I was their, "Number One
Pavement Pounder," and that was meant as a compliment.
They each send me a package of magazine and newspaper clips each month,
and I know for certain that it does a writer good with his/her publisher,
when they always have a lot of clips to send you each month. A surprisingly
large number of authors don't do much at all to self promote their works,
and publishers appreciate those who do.
And I especially appreciate what you, Doreen, said about us looking out
for each other. I feel that we in the GWA should as much as possible be
supportive of fellow members, and I know of no better way to do that (for
the book writers out there) than writing reviews. I try to always make a
point to, when I read a book I like, to go to www.Amazon.com and write up a
good review. This takes only a few minutes. I then copy the review and also
post it at www.BN.com , Barnes and Noble's website. I know these reviews
help move books. Curiously enough, the Google web crawlers also pick up on
these reviews, and just writing them then adds to your own Google numbers.
More and more reporters use the web to research their articles. If they
look up say, compost, and your name comes up quickly several times on that
first page, they assume you're THE compost expert and they come to you
first. Often too these writers are not normally writing about garden-related
subjects. For example, because I'm out there so much on the Internet,
recently I got a call from a NY Times writer doing an article on the lawn
care industry. This resulted in a few good lines about me in the NY Times
Business section...and that sold a surprising number of books and also
brought me another very interesting consulting offer. I recommend that all
GWA members put in some real time and effort at increasing their Google and
Yahoo numbers.
Tom
