here's an update on my orange echinacea. one flower fully out, 6 more buds along the stem. the petals open thin and yellow-orange but the color deepens as the flower ages and the petals widen out as well. my flower is a lovely lustrous orange. Petals hang down in a fashion that suggests the prairie native Echinacea pallida, which someone said was part of its genetic heritage.
at a garden center in Chicago last week, i smelled one that was nicely fragrant, although I can't yet detect any scent from mine.
the only downside to the plant for me is its height. I have it in front of a 3-year-old 'Hot Cocoa' rose, and the echinacea is taller than the rose.
