Sandy and Tom bring up excellent points. We need to watch out for one
another, and each one of us should Google our pen names monthly. In Tom's
case, as he stated, the free use of his article enhances his book sales.
That is not the case for those of us who write mostly for magazines. Every
free use deprives us of reprint fees. Tom might also consider that his
publisher can demand excerpt fees for chapter or partial chapter use in
magazines. That is what copyright protection is all about.

Last month when I Googled my name, I found that a large real estate
investment corporation had one of my articles, along with my byline, on its
web site. They never asked permission from me or the magazine in which the
article originally appeared. I contacted the corporation immediately and
asked they take down my article or pay. They took it down, but the magazine
involved is now pursuing payment for them and me for the time the article
ran.

Reprint and excerpt rights are valuable. Many years, I make about 20
percent of my total income from such fees.
