In 1999 I worked at a golf course. I was allowed to pretend that grass didn't
count, and the large shade trees were pruned by someone else with my advice.
I did the small ornamental trees. We had a few decorative beds that required
mulch. I collected coffee grounds from several Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts
and it was an excellent mulch for a very dense clay soil. It did not look
like the usual shredded bark park that is symbol of people who don't
understand
the goals of mulch and only want to demonstrate a generous budget. Coffee
grounds also contain some potassium about 1 to 2 percent. You can use
hundreds of
pounds of coffee per thousand square feet of mulched beds. I also used it in
some very sandy soil which can't get enough organic matter. If garden clubs
across America were to collect coffee grounds from their local coffee shops
it
would help horticulture and take a minuscule quantity out of the waste
stream. Merely suggesting that homeowners toss their coffee grounds under
shrubs in
the yard would be sensible.
