Interestingly enough on this topic, RHS 'The Garden' has a bit on
slug control in the latest issue. They mention a biological control -
a microscopic pathogenic nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita,
which is watered into the soil; enters the slug and releases a
bacteria that kills them. Affected slugs remain underground; stop
feeding and die in a few days. Said it may also attack newly hatched
snails but is not effective on adult snails since they spend most of
their time above ground. Said this nematode only attacks mollusks;
has no effect on other animals.

Looks rather promising...some of you Canadians need to try it out and
tell us if it works.
