Duane,

Give me a mailing address and I'll send you some of the best stories about David Burpee. Some of my recollections are out being looked at right now--if they get published I'll let you know.

Writing a book? Well, I guess I could, but I'm too old, I'm too busy, it's awfully nice outside, the roses are blooming, I need to fill the bird feeder...etc. etc.

My Flower Power column appears in Southern California newspapers and periodicals only. But it has been on www.icangarden.com, although a reader recently e-mailed me and said nothing was up for March. I'm checking with Donna on this--it appears there under Gardening From Southern California.

Working for Burpee, and especially being fairly close to David Burpee was a real kick. He was a marvelous person, had some strange ideas, very strong convictions, about most everything, could be really hard on employees, but was almost always fair with me. I started out as an inventory control clerk in 1950, progressed through plant superintendent, then manager, and ended up in the late 1980s as vice president and western regional manager. I got close to him because when he came to the west coast to parley with the branch and farm managers out here, he usually stayed at nearby Palm Springs with the other elite.
