Sorry-- the previous message went off prematurely.

...So anyway, if you are using a walk-behind seeder or even a tractor
seeder such as a planet jr, you need to let the surfaces of the seeds
dry without letting the insides dry--this calls for vigilance. I set
them on a towel in the sunshine and roll them around every few minutes.
As soon as the surfaces stop glistening, I load the seed cups.

Another good system, and the only one that consistently worked with
Golden Beets, was to place the seeds between sheets of parchment paper
and gently roll over the upper sheet with a rolling pin. This breaks up
the "fruit" material between the seeds so that they will be exposed to
moisture when they are in the soil. It probably injures a few seeds,
too, but I get better germination this way than any other on golden
beets.

What's your favorite variety (varieties) of beets and what do you do to
insure even germination? I have more misses in my beet rows than any
other
vegetable. Anyone tried growing sugar beets?
