The addition is a new consideration, based on an analysis of the Biblical data
regarding the phenomenon denoted by the term PEIRASMOS and its cognates and
what
this says about this phenomenon's inevitability and desirability, of why the
prayer that Jesus has the disciples pray cannot be seen as a prayer to
escape or
be protected from their experiencing PEIRASMOS.
It is taken and produced with some modification from a paper I gave at the
SBL in
Orlando some years back on the meaning of Matt. 6:13//Lk. 11:4 -- the phrase
of
the LP which Mk 14:38 parallels and probably alludes to/draws upon. You might
want
to consider that if Mk 14:38 is an allusion to this petition, your
interpretation
of the prayer has some serious hurdles to clear.
A draft of the paper on the PEIRASMOS petition in the LP is available online
at:
http://www.bham.ac.uk/theology/synoptic-l/gibson.htm
And since you are noting that my views on Mk 14:38 are not without their
supporters within the professional NT guild, I hope you'll indulge (forgive)
**me** for noting that my view on the meaning of the parallel to Mk 14:38 in
the
LP (the PEIRASMOS petition in the LP (and therefore also Matt. and Luke's
view of
the Gethsemane prayer) -- which is that it (too) is a prayer for protection
from
acting like "this generation" and from putting God to the test -- has been
accepted and subsequently advanced by N.T. Wright.
Yours,
JG
