I do have a /usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.sl file. Now that I have replaced .so
with .sl in the odbcinst.ini file, everything is working. Should I have known
that since I am on HP-UX the file would have a different extension? Could it
be added somewhere in the documentation that the driver file might not always
end in .so? It would have saved me a LOT of time if I had known this because
I saw the .sl files and just thought they were for something else... Thank
you very much to everyone that helped!!!

HP-UX use .sl extension so probably you will find a libtdsodbc.sl.

Try also a

$ cd src/odbc
$ ls .libs

you should see some *.o files and the .sl file.

No, and as usual you should avoid to even compile anything using root
account.
