I don't think this is a matter of taste.

My terminals all use the default tab stops of 8. I'm sure I'm in the
majority on this point.

If we (the FreeTDS project) declare that tab stops are 5, then our code
looks like complete garbage on the majority of terminals in the world. (Or,
less subjectively, the code is simply not rendered correctly due to nothing
else lining up properly, and because gindent's concepts of line length are
invalidated by the mismatch in your tab stop versus mine.)

I don't understand why we would want to insist on enforcing that users must
reconfigure their terminals to work on or even to casually peruse our code.

Cheers,
--nick

I'm OK with the rest of the changes, per Frediano's description.

I oppose replacing tabs with spaces, as does Brian. Others have voiced the
same opinion. Given a lack of consensus for change, I submit that the
status quo (regarding tabs) should stand.

Nick, I'll go along with whatever settings you feel are needed to support
using tabs with a tabstop of 5. I understand we don't agree on this point,
although I think we agree it's a noncritical matter of taste. At the end of
the day, though, I think Brian's opinion ought to be given due weight.
