I can't say that I have "a" favorite book about Paul.
I suppose the following five are favorites, in
different ways, for the reason you mention.

* Best overview of Paul: The Paul Quest, by Ben
Witherington.

* Best intro to the New Perspective on Paul: Paul
Among Jews and Gentiles and Other Essays, by Krister
Stendahl.

* Best socio-political interpretation(s) of Paul: Paul
and Empire & Paul and Politics, both edited by Richard
Horsley.

* Best cultural backdrop to Paul: Portraits of Paul:
An Archaeology of an Ancient Personality, by Bruce
Malina and Jerome Neyrey.

* Best book about Paul as a source of understanding
for the historical Jesus: Saint Saul: A Skeleton Key
to the Historical Jesus, by Donald Akenson.
