Nominees for best books on Paul, in two categories:
1. Best scholarly treatment of Paul (tie): A. D. Nock, ST. PAUL and Nils Dahl, STUDIES IN PAUL
2. Best non-technical book offering insight into Pauline theology: Richard Neuhaus's FREEDOM FOR MINISTRY, in particular Neuhaus's account of the Gospel as the invitation to embrace now the sovereignty of Christ over all creation, a sovereignty which will eventually be made evident to all but in the meantime remains in dispute. (Can't really cite pages because this account is rather diffusely presented throughout the book; listers can decide whether understanding Paul can be furthered by reading a book oriented towards the practice of ministry. Dahl can be cited in favor as he notes that Paul was a missionary rather than an academic theologian, subtitling his book THEOLOGY FOR THE EARLY CHRISTIAN MISSION.)
Nominees are being forwarded to the Nobel committee on Exegesis, who will doubtless find a way to use the award to take a swipe at American policy on Iraq.
