Bracketing what the classic and current literature on Pauline theology may say, I would say that Paul thought exactly what you said, Liz.  I see a pretty consistent christology in 1 Thessalonians where Jesus, the Son of God, "saves us from the wrath which is coming" (1 Thess. 1:9-10).  Regardless of the fact that Paul seems to quote the a hymn in Philippians 2, he seems to agree with Jesus' preexistence with the father.  Extremely interesting is Romans 1:3-4 where Jesus is Son of David "according to the flesh," and Son of God "according to the spirit of holiness" (= the Holy Spirit) "since" (taking EK temporally!) "his resurrection from the dead."  See Robert Jewett's article in The Living Text (Ernest Saunders FS.; University Press of America).

Also I think that Paul adumbrates Jesus' voluntary self-offering pretty clearly in Romans 5:7-8.  I see this as quite consistent with Markan and Johannine theology.  A good question would be whether this is Pauline or prepauline.  Compare 1 Cor 15:3-4 in what Paul unmistakably marks as prepauline tradition: the necessity of Jesus' death "for our sins" "according to the scriptures."
