Wondering if others could comment on the suggestion that hOI ADELFOI TOU
KURIOU in 1 Cor 9:5 does not refer to the siblings of Jesus (as assumed by
most commentators) but to a recognised group of missionaries. hO ADELFOS, as
you know, is a common designation of missionaries in Paul (Rom 16:14 ; Rom
16:23 ; 1 Cor 1:1 ; 1 Cor 16:11 ; 1 Cor 16:12 ; 1 Cor 16:12 ; 1Cor
16:20 ; 2 Cor 1:1 ; 2 Cor 2:13 ; 2 Cor 8:18 ; 2 Cor 8:22 ; 2 Cor
8:23 ; 2 Cor 9:3 ; 2 Cor 9:5 ; 2 Cor 11:9 ; 2 Cor 12:18 ; Gal 1:2 ;
Phil 1:14 ; Phil 2:25 ; Phil 4:21 ; 1The 3:2 ; Phle 1:1 ; Phle 1:7 ;
Phle 1:20). I am wondering why it is not so read here in 1 Cor 9. Is the
modifier TOU KURIOU so decisive? Furthermore, might not the five hundred
brothers of 1 Cor 15:6 be thought of in a simlar way? I know Ellis has
written on this subject in regard to many of the texts quoted in brackets
but I don't think he deals with 1 Cor 9:5 or 15:6.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
