Well, from post-NT times on through the present in the traditions of
Greek christianity, the terms "deacon" and "deaconess" refer to rather
different job descriptions. The deaconess never had the same liturgical
functions as the deacon, and she was See, e.g., T. Hopko, ed., Women &
the Priesthood (St Vladimir's Seminary Press: Crestwood, NY, 1983-- a
new ed. of this book is reputedly in the offing, which will contain some
interesting new material).
Personally I think we just don't have enough info about the NT church to
say if this was already true in those days, unless you can accept the
2d-3d century traditions about the matter. Anything else is
speculation, and desire.
