Amen! You're exactly right -- these are the tools of liberation! Now we need to break an independent act out from this non-label environment to get this message heard.

And without buying hookers and blow for radio programmers.

You have hit the nail on the head, Richard. Authorized and Good. The creation
of
a new body of music is a necessity. Creative Commons won't take off until it
become's record label.

We have 70,000 authorized tracks at Dmusic.com . Many of them are also good.
All are downloadable and streamable and free.
So far, at least. Many musicians don't want free music, and are clamoring for
1)Fame/promotion 3)Sales/revenue 3) to a lesser extent, DRM (security) Look at
the RAC ( recording artists coalition). They have been mobilized for DRM and
anti- p2p as effectively propganda as Glenn Miller and Bob Hope for the USO.

To me the issue is freedom. Freedom to be a slave is what most musicians seem
to
want. They all want to "sign" things, most of which are indentured servitude
arrangements. The last 5 years (post Mp3.com) are like the Reconstruction in
the South - the slaves are still living on the plantation, can't believing they
can leave. Its cold out there, that freedom thing.
As far as i can see, a GNU style approach is necessary for music, from the user
and artist end. Copyright is arguably played out, at least artistically. There
are only 8 to 12 notes in a western scale. The mathematical permutations are
far less that the 26 letter alphabet. It may no longer be possible to be
original in light of the musical "prior art". My dog and grandmother can both
use a sampler or a sequencer. Is 50 cent an artiste? If so, its because of the
rap, not the music.

If Dmusic is a movement, you ought to join it.

<rms AT gnu.org>:

Unless you stay away from unauthorized music,

...you make it harder for us to build up music which is both
authorized and good...

Your reasoning is based on your belief that music is substitutable.
As I've said, I don't think so.

- The things you are promoting to others ("hey, check out this
great carnatic song") are going to be unshareable.

Since I refuse to get corrupt disks, whatever I get will be sharable.
(I don't think DRM is used much for these kinds of music.)

- You cannot follow the golden rule when you like something,

I not only can, I do.

- You tell others 'we need the RIAA,' which is not true.
>
That is a far stretch from what my words and actions actually say. I
think I've made my views clear in numerous public speeches on this
issue.

- You are not free if you have to break the law in order to obey
a moral imperative.

It is entirely legitimate, and may in some situation be useful, to
reject all music that can't legally be shared. However, defying evil
laws is also a legitimate response to the problems they cause.

- If you really cannot give up unauthorized distribution, you
must give up hiding in order to be free. For example, you
could document every instance of unauthorized distribution by
publishing screen casts of your computer use whenever you
engage in unauthorized distribution. You could also send a
notification letter to the holder of a copyright whenever you
do something which violates their terms.

It is no more ethically obligatory to inform the RIAA when you make a
copy than it is to inform the DEA when you smoke pot.

Doing so could be a form of protest, if it is effective. I don't feel
it is likely to be effective here and now. But if I see a large
movement get started doing this, and it looks likely to be successful,
I could join it.
