The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
Nervous But Excited (http://www.myspace.com/nervousbutexcited)
Humble Tripe (http://www.myspace.com/shawnluby)
The Pinhook, Durham

11 - Humble Tripe
10 - Nervous but Excited
9 - Tender Fruit

I so dearly love The Tender Fruit . . . singer/songwriter Christy Smith combines a deep twang with a wicked writer's sensibility. Things are rarely exactly what they appear to be in her songs; listen closely & they prove to be both weirder & more wonderful.

Thursday, February 25
Starmount (http://www.myspace.com/starmountmusic)
The Jackets (http://www.reverbnation.com/TheJackets)
The Small Ponds
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Starmount are a strangely spacey instrumental outfit from Raleigh, who mix pedal steel & electronics to make highly distinctive soundtracks to deep-space FutureTV.

Small Ponds are the new-ish project of Tres Chicas' Caitlin Cary and the Proclivities' Matt Douglas.

Knives and Daggers (http://www.myspace.com/knivesanddaggersmusic)
The Pinhook, Durham

12 - Shipwrecker
11 - Mosadi Music
10 - Knives and Daggers

Shipwrecker are Durham's masters of rocking-and-rolling, yawing-and-pitching seafaring country weirdness.

Friday, February 26
Rat Jackson (http://www.myspace.com/ratjacksonmusic)
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
River City Ransom (http://www.myspace.com/rivercityransomband)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Thanks in part to booker Rusty Sutton, the Broad Street Cafe is quickly becoming the destination for live local music in Durham. Here's a snapshot of highlights from their next few weeks, ripped shamelessly from Rusty's Facebook status:

"Sets by I Was Totally Destroying It, The Love Language, The Loners, Pink Flag, Richard Bacchus and the Luckiest Girls, The Pneurotics, A Rooster for the Masses, The Dry Heathens, Bustello, D-Town Brass, The Travesties, Rat Jackson, Simeon and so many more..."

Friday, February 26
The Invisible Hand (http://www.myspace.com/adamsmith)
Americans in France (http://www.myspace.com/americansinfrance)
Naked Gods (http://www.myspace.com/nakedgods)
Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Two of the bestest weirdest rockpoprock bands of 2009, Americans in France & Whatever Brains, have apparently survived into the 2010. Glory Hallelujah. With the Southern Rock (with a dash of spacenoize) stylings of Boone's Naked Gods.

Friday, February 26
Wild Wild Geese (http://www.myspace.com/wildwildgeesemusic)
Wooden Toothe (http://www.myspace.com/woodentoothe)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, February 26
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Michael Rank (http://www.sleazegrinder.com/teensleazehanoi.htm)
Rosie Hellfire and The Red Hot Rebelettes (http://www.myspace.com/redhotrebelettes)
Reservoir, Carrboro

This is a CD-release for the new Blag'ard disc, Mach II. I haven't heard it, but I *did* get a copy of the never-released 1996 album by guitarist Joe Taylor's other band, Capsize 7. Still one of the most distinctive guitar tones/styles to ever come from Chapel Hill

Friday, February 26
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls (http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Michael Burgin & Drinkers Union
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, February 27
The Breaks (http://www.reverbnation.com/thebreaksofpittsboro)
Simeon (http://www.myspace.com/simeonberkley)
Bustello (http://www.myspace.com/bustellomusic)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

One of the strengths of the Triangle music community is that, by and large, there aren't age-limits, upper or lower, on participation. Sure, there are plenty of college-aged bands . . . but more than a few locals (including John Booker of I Was Totally Destroying it, and all three members of Hammer No More the Fingers) were rocking local stages when they were in high school.

The same is true on the upper end as well. Some bands--Superchunk & Lud, for instance--have been around in one form or another for 15-20 years.

Others, such as all three bands on tonight's bill, are new combinations of longtime local veterans. Bustello pairs the twangy guitar & distinctive voice of Ben Clarke (Metal Flake Mother) with veteran rhythm section Jody Maxwell & John Plymale (Sex Police, many more). Simeon is the brainchild of Simeon Berkeley (Mind Sirens, many more) & Robbie Breitweiser (Ruebarb, many more), and features Groves Willer (Bobo the Amazing Rubberfaced Boy, Evil Weiner, Shark Quest) on drums.

And the Breaks feature Steve Carr & Brunson Hoole (Emperors of Ice Cream) with What Peggy Wants singer John Ensslin out front. They're a sharp, lean, ultra-focused powerpop machine.

Saturday, February 27
The Strugglers (http://www.thestrugglers.org/)
Felix Obelix (http://www.myspace.com/felixobelix)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

There's a nice big article about Wendy Spitzer & Felix Obelix in this week's Indy, along with some song samples, so I'll wait while you go check it out. http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid:411556

Along with a rare Felix Obelix live performance (one listen to the record & you'll understand: this stuff is tricky to play), Wendy will provide you with a stamped envelope, so you can write a letter to your future self. She'll hang onto the letters and then mail them in October 2010.

Rare, as well, is this opportunity to see Randy Bickford's Strugglers augmented with a string quartet ... especially now that Randy has moved to the DC area. May be a while before he graces a local stage again.
