Potential Renters,

There are some houses for rent in my neighborhood: three that I know of, two small and one Big (The Big House). It'd be nice if musicians (of the mostly responsible variety), or music-friendly folk moved into them, as that's been the theme of the neighborhood for a while, hence my posting here.

The street is Huse St. It is a Durham address, but is on the Chapel Hill side of I-40 (check the map link below). It is a little dirt road in the woods, and yet convenient to everywhere (near 15-50, near I-40, 1/2 way b/w Durham and Chapel Hill, and near I-40 so Raleigh isn't too far).

The little house behind mine (avail now) is $600. The big house next door is $900 (this is a house of some renown--parties, bands, much grilling...you may have woken up there once). Not sure about the other house. They're being rented by Dunlap-Lilley Properties. Chris Rossi has an unvarnished description of the Big House below (he's moving out). DLP has done a lot of work on the little house behind mine, so they may do the same to the Big House. If the rent is too much for you, I would propose you bargain with Jim Lilley--maybe offer something in return (rebuild the carport, yard upkeep, painting...), he can be reasonable, especially in this economy. Feel free to drive through the neighborhood--the houses for sale all have signs in front.

Big House Description:

The Big House has either 7 or 4 bedrooms, depending on how you
count. One of the "bedrooms", a converted garage, has been used for several
years now as a band practice space. One bedroom is really two rooms, but
you have to pass through one to get to the other so they have historically
been treated as a single room. The downstairs bedroom also has another room
next to it, but it would need a door installed to function as another
bedroom. That room is currently the control room for Spacelab Recording
Studio.

Rent is $900/month. The landlord may try to increase it between tenants. I
don't know.

The Big House has been a rock and roll house for nearly 20 years. The
current crop of tenants started out 11 years ago. Countless bands have
rehearsed or been recorded here.

The foundation is currently crumbling, causing the floor to warp in places
and the walls to crack in others. The crawl space and likely the walls,
too, are farely well infested by mold which may or may not pose a health
issue, depending on whether you're sensitive to that kind of thing. I have
had continuous sinus problems since before Thanksgiving. This is the reason
I have chosen to move out sooner rather than later.

The Big House is available on 3/16.

Chris
