If you went to the Sound Opinions thing last night, you heard a lot of talk about 1000 true fans. You probably didn't hear anything about Kevin Kelly, the guy who proposed the idea & has written a lot about it. If you want to read more, here's his original essay:

If you *didn't* go to the thing last night, they spent a lot of time talking about new models for artists to survive (it was the "Future of Musicians" more than the "Future of Music"), and the one they kept hammering on was the notion that one can make a solid middle-class living by providing different levels of value to different types of fan, and by focusing on your 1000 hardcore fans & giving them extra value.
The thing last night was kind of a mish-mash, but Kevin's essay is much clearer & well worth reading.
