The county owns it & is putting a library & EMS station on part of the property. They solicited proposals for redevelopment of the rest of the site, including the extant buildings, back in October/November 2004:

"Durham County is requesting property developers to propose their vision of how this site or a portion of the site can be used to maximize public benefit and private value, while focusing on one or more of the historic buildings. Opportunities include mixed use development in conjunction with the library and EMS station as well as reuse of existing buildings where feasible. Adaptive reuse and/or preservation of the two story building located at the northern portion of the site is considered a priority. Based on the architectural survey by Eddie Belk, the two-story building in the northwest corner has the greatest potential for reuse. Proposals should explain how that building, along with any others, can be reused without compromising the County’s objectives."

I'd always assumed the whole place was up-to-here in asbestos & that's why it'd sat dormant for so long.

A few years ago, I was tangentially involved with an effort to get the Lowe's Grove school property turned into some sort of cultural asset, with the specific goal of saving the auditorium for performances. Bill Monroe played there backwhen, on the kerosene circuit (sort of the white version of the chitlin' circuit). I'm not so involved anymore, but the property is still standing. For now. It's an awesome, if decrepit, public space, and it would be a shame to see it knocked down and forgotten. Durham Historial Preservation are the folks to contact if anyone wanted to get involved.
