As far as I'm concerned, it's completely on topic.

Whether you play games or not, the fact is that there is a gaping hole
in the games industry and wider open source community for royalty free
and CC licensed game artwork, level designs, textures, maps, assets
etc... the point is, that while there's a whole lot of 3D rendering
and game engine technology that is open sourced under various
licenses, the landscape of art and content is completely barren.

This is an area which could really benefit from further discussion and
feedback.

Part of the problem is that there no well publicized open standards
for shared model formats or asset pipelining. This presents a barrier
to up and coming designers and programmers, in terms of them not being
able to make use of shared community resources for experimentation and
building new and interesting games. It generally means that you can't
make anything in these 3D engines without a massive budget.

I would be very interested to find out about any initiatives or even
just ideas for how to see progress on this.
