Chris Lott:
"For some, the non-commercial restriction might be about CONTROLLING
commercial use, but for others it just might be about NOT HAVING
commercial use. I created the material for other people to use freely,
not for someone to make money on by restricting it."
--------------------
What happens if a commercial publisher - or an open source content
distributor (who would make revenue by converting your lecture to
paper-bound book and distributing widely) - wants to distribute your work?
In those (or similar) cases, the license would simply say that all parties
with commercial (and for profit) intent are required to negotiate with you
first; if they don't, they're in violation of copyright, and the legal
system takes it from there. This let's the author decide to let the material
go commercial (for whatever royalty you agree on), or not. This would give
you "control", as well as the ability to say "yes, or no" to the entire
endeavor (of publishing for profit, in or out of education)
Thus, the license could (should?) explicitly say that "in all cases of
publishing and/or distribution of this material for private gain, the author
must first be be consulted for permission to do so" (or something like
that). ..."in all cases" would cover *all* instances, whether
education-related, or not.
