BNA: I hate to cut across the grain on this issue, but would a second
license, allowing commercial use, have both individual appeal and a positive
social function? I can imagine cases where a creator imagines commercial
exploitation, but lacks the ability to arrange for it, and would be happy to
receive attribution, along with the possibility of some benefit down the
road.

ZC: I understand your point exactly, Bryan, and I tend to agree that a commercial option shouldn't be ruled out. Fortunately, if I understand it correctly, CC non-commercial lets us have our cake and eat it too. It allows us to permit non-commercial use up front and thereby contribute to the commons and the academic community, but if a private sector interest wants to use our creation, we are still protected by copyright. They can then seek our permission for commercial use, which, I imagine, would include remuneration of some kind.

Ahh! Glad I read the rest of my mail before replying. This was my thinking exactly. Noncommerical use is granted across the board; if someone wants to make a commercial use, they contact and request as normal under traditional copyright.
