ZC: I think this component is a prerequisite if we are going forward with
this
project, otherwise we would just be using pre-existing cc licenses.

ZC: My initial reaction is to think that explicitly requiring Attribution may
seem redundant, given the educational use clause. We could let attribution be
handled by existing school policy on plagiarism, and by judicial committees.
However, as many institutions are facing rising instances of plagiarism (from
generation p2p), I think that an explicit Attribution clause could underscore
good scholarship and be an effective learning tool for undergraduates.

ZC: This would require a textbook publisher to compensate a free media
producer
for use of their cc.edu licensed learning objects in a textbook bundle. I
think
that's a good protection (and incentive) to keep.

ZC: Imho, this is the most valuable component for fostering the kind of
collaborative creativity that cc was designed to engender. I urge you all to
vote to keep this clause.

In response to detractors of the separate license and the educational use
clause: I think your point, that it may, in some cases, result in more
restrictive licensing, is well taken. However, I believe that that risk is
overshadowed by the countervailing risk that, in the absence of cc.edu, more
content contributors may opt for non-participation and protect their work
instead with copyright. Feel free to contact me off-list if you'd like to
discuss this further.

best,
Zach
