Hi Sindi & Ron,
Please take a look at this. ?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org

Requirement for LibreOffice under linux:

kernel 2.6.18
glibc 2.5
gtk 2.10.4
1024 resolution, 256 colors
256MB RAM (512 better)
1.55GB hard drive

I failed to compile a 2.6 kernel for BL2.

These names were about 16 characters long so it won't work.
That could be why I saw only ONE png file go by in DOS.

? Ah !? That makes things a bit more difficult.

Some Epson scanner produced this mess. The owner said he had to use Windows drivers because they are proprietary, though he prefers linux.

Why such ridiculously long file names?

? Does the name Microsoft mean anything to you ?
Too much.

How big is OpenOffice

? It is quite big.

200MB download for Windows, 150 for linux, plus language packs etc.

? and what are the dependencies?

? Can't remember off-hand. But I installed a version into BL2 (disabled
java to do it), so it is possible.

How did you disable java? Did you use a much older version with 2.4 kernel, glibc 2.3, and gtk1?

? That doesn't surprise me. Docx and odt are such bloated formats it
takes a long time to process them all - most tags are redundant and are
automatically inserted whether thay are needed or not. I had to put a
progress bar into my converter so I could tell it was still working and
hadn't locked up !

Same for pdf files. Even if they are only images, lots of garbage about fonts and styles gets added automatically.

People write emails with MS wordprocessor instead of a text editor.

? Because they don't know any better.? :(

If you really NEED to read/write docx files there is zoho.com and probably other sites by now. Requires a fast connection.
