Toshiba SatellitePro 4200 series (also other 4000 series) have S3 Savage ms/ix video chip which works with Xfbdev (framebuffer) but not with:

Xvesa (uclibc or glibc21 precompiled)
SVGA X server (From Slackware 71 - did not try later ones)
Xsavage tinyX precompiled driver from Xorg 4.80 (which also did not work with a desktop Gigabyte)
svgalib savage driver (zgv crashes and I had to power off)

Xorg says this was fixed in 4.02 (and 3.3.6fix08). And that the chip is not supported by Xvesa or 3.3.6 Xsavage. Apparently also not by tinyX.

SW81 has Xorg 4.2.0 but the binaries are all in a 13MB file.
Is there some place to download just a Savage X driver?
SW71 has them individually.

This laptop has a 14" screen with 1024 resolution, unusual for its age.
From late 1999 or early 2000. Slackware 7.1 is from 2000.

Xfbdev does not work with Abiword (Steven's or the one from Amigo Linux, which uses gtk 1.2 and glibc 2.3). Gtk-error.

The gtk-1.2 Dillo 0.86 from Amigo Linux did work so it is not simply that gtk does not like Xfbdev as someone guessed a few years ago - Abiword does not work with Xfbdev/gtk.. (I have not tried Firefox gtk with xfbdev yet).

Xfbdev did play DVDs with mplayer. (I avoided svga and vesa expecting them to cause crashes).

Lucent modem. Yamaha sound ymfpci works with kernel 2.4 (said not to work with 2.2). 1024 x 768 screen, rare for this age computer (250MHz, late 1999 BIOS).

Amigo linux Dillo worked but sagcad segfaulted (maybe also due to Xfbdev).
They have lots of gtk-1.2 based binaries and source code. GLIBC 2.3.
