Try less -r. It should display upper ascii, but am not absolutely
sure.

That did it.
-r -R --raw-control-chars

Apparently the actual extended ascii character is a raw control character and the default is the hex number of the character.

Less puts the file name at the bottom of the screen on one line.
Can I eliminate that?

I made a script l (less -r $1).

What kind of cat are you using?

busybox 1.3.2 (yours).
Options: -u ignored
