As I understand it, your library network is
unencrypted. If so, it is irrelevant whether
the card does encryption or not.

if I only use a browser and do not enter any
passwords? With BL?

Your risks would be similar to browsing the
internet without a firewall. Are you running
any servers whereby a remote attacker could
gain access? Are you running as root?

No servers, yes as root but I can change that (or at least add a password).

Should I avoid typing in any passwords (to access shell accounts via ssh, or webmail)? Can I set up a firewall with default gateway?

My only need for this is for downloading large files.

Would a 350 pick up a county-wide wireless signal?

I believe the maximum range for an Airo 350 is
around a kilometer. The range is less if there
are any obstructions (buildings, rain, etc.).

Would the 340 be 1/3 that? I can detect neighbors' wireless networks.
I was able to browse for 20 sec on one network (which I know I should not do but it was a test, which did not work well since it disconnected).

The central broadcast unit is a few blocks from here. Through buildings.

Cheers,
Steven
